Captain America: The First Avenger (2011 – Blu-Ray)

“One of the things people always forget is that the first country the Nazis invaded was their own”

I finally gave in to temptation and got myself a copy of ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ on Blu-Ray.  Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight’ is of course the greatest Comic book movie ever but Joe Johnston’s 2011 film came a close second.  Viewing it at home I was again struck by the tight pacing, witty script, winning performances and period detail.  The genius of the script has you rooting for the scrawny Brooklynite Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) for the first 40 minutes as he stands up to bullies even though he knows they will give him a beating.  So when science makes him into the muscle-bound all american superhero you still view him as that plucky underdog you fell in love with in the first part (Not the smug patriotic goof The Cap could’ve been in less skillful hands).  So when Captain America goes in single-handedly behind enemy lines to rescue his best friend it’s got real power because you know that weedy kid from Brooklyn would’ve gone in any way, superpowers or no.

The special features on the Blu-Ray are excellent including a commentary and many featurettes and deleted scenes.  The best bit though is the footage revealing how they did that amazing body reduction effect on Chris Evans.  I’m gonna have to get the import Blu-Ray of 1991’s ‘The Rocketeer’ now, so I can enjoy a personal Joe Johnston period Comic book adventure double bill.
